Introduction
Brendoncare Park Road provides nursing and residential care within premises situated on Park Road, Winchester. The home was founded during the 1950s by the late Mrs Phoebe Bacon in order to provide care for those who could no longer live independently at home and has since been extended to provide a purpose-built nursing wing providing care for up to 48 residents.
Staff Members
Acting Home Manager - Hilary Harding
Hilary is a Registered Nurse with extensive experience of managing care homes. The Home Manager is responsible for the management of all aspects of the operation of the home with the support of a team of senior staff.
Unit Managers - Robert Wemyss RGN (new wing), Lizzie Mofokeng (old wing), Carol Asher RGN (house)
The Unit Managers are the senior clinical nurses for the home and lead the teams of nursing and care staff. They are closely involved in arranging the assessment and admission to the home of new residents and deputise for the Home Manager when required.
Support Services Manager - Jan Gapper, BSc Occupational Therapy
Jan is a qualified Occupational Therapist and joined the home in 2004 as Activities Organiser. Jan's role has since expanded to include responsibility for supervision of the catering and housekeeping departments, which involves working closely with our Catering Manager and Housekeeping Supervisor.
Administrator - Clare Tibble
Clare has worked within the administration team since 2000 and is responsible for financial matters relating to residents including fees, invoicing and personal monies. Clare is also closely involved in the admission of new residents, acting as a main point of contact for pre-admission enquiries relating to finance and funding.
Catering Manager - Sara Saunders
Sara is responsible for the provision of all food and refreshments within the home and leads a team of Cooks and Kitchen Assistants.
Other Staff
In addition to the above staff, Brendoncare Park Road has approximately 80 other staff employed in a range of roles within the nursing, care, housekeeping, catering and maintenance teams. All staff have been subject to pre-employment checks including Criminal Records Bureau screening and receive ongoing training and support in their roles. 16 Carers achieved NVQ qualifications at Level 2 or 3.
Admission to the Home
Brendoncare Park Road is registered with the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) to provide Nursing and Residential care to individuals aged 70 or over who fall within the registration category "Old Age". This generally means that the primary needs of any potential resident must be related to physical ill health and/or disability rather than be due to any form of dementia, confusion or mental health problem. On occasions and by individual arrangement, we are sometimes able to provide care to residents who fall outside of this normal age category.
It is highly recommended that all potential residents and/or their family visit the home prior to making a decision to move to Brendoncare Park Road. Once this has taken place, an application form may be completed and placed on the waiting list. Please note that there is little advantage in placing an application on the waiting list many months or years before the need for care arises.
All admissions to the home are subject to a full assessment of needs carried out by a senior member of the nursing staff. At times when dependency in the home is particularly high, it may not be possible to admit residents with particularly complex needs. Such decisions are only taken in consultation with the Home Manager but are necessary to ensure the continued effective running of the home.
We can occasionally offer short stay/respite care subject to availability but we do not have dedicated rooms for this purpose. We regret that we are unable to accept emergency admissions.
Facilities/Services
Although Brendoncare Park Road operates as a single home, it can, for practical purposes, be divided into three areas:
The House: The original Brendon House, consisting of 16 single bedrooms, most with en-suite facilities or private bathroom, plus Dining Room and Sitting Room. Until recently, the house was registered solely for Residential Care but, after substantial improvements during 2004, 8 of the rooms are now also registered for Nursing Care.
Old Wing: A purpose built Nursing Wing built during the 1970s and since, further extended. This wing consists of 15 single bedrooms, 6 of which have en-suite facilities, and 3 bathrooms.
New Wing: Built during the 1980s this wing comprises 17 single bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
Both Nursing Wings also have direct access to the McAndrew Room, a large communal area overlooking the garden, which is used as a Sitting Room, Dining Room and as a focal point for many of the social activities within the home.
Social Activities
A range of social activities take place in the home throughout the week including "keep fit", arts and crafts, baking, reminiscence, quizzes, games and outings. An Activities Organiser who is a qualified Occupational Therapist is employed to co-ordinate activities.
A service of Holy Communion takes place twice monthly on a Wednesday morning in the McAndrew Room. Residents who wish to arrange for religious ministers from other faiths to attend are most welcome.
We also encourage residents to maintain regular contact with family and friends and operate an open visiting policy unless requested otherwise by individual residents.
Privacy/Dignity/Choice
It is our policy to respect that residents continue to enjoy the same rights and freedom that they enjoyed prior to admission to the home. These include the right to privacy and dignity in day to day life. Staff will always address residents by their chosen form of address and will not enter bedrooms without first knocking. We also encourage residents to make their own choices about how they wish to live and do not impose unnecessary routines or strictures upon residents.
Comments/Complaints
It is the policy of the home to actively encourage feedback from the involvement of residents, relatives and visitors about the service provided. Regular resident meetings take place to allow a forum for residents to be kept informed of events within the home and make suggestions on how further improvements may be brought about.
Brendoncare operates a Comments and Complaints Policy to allow a formal means of dealing with any issue that may cause concern. Should you wish to comment on or complain about any aspect of our service please discuss this with the Nurse in Charge in the first instance as many problems can be resolved immediately in this manner. If you do not wish to deal with the matter in this way you may, instead, make your concern known either verbally or in writing to one of the following senior staff:
Hilary Harding - Acting Home Manager
Robert Wemyss/Carol Asher/Lizzie Mofokeng - Unit Managers
Jan Gapper - Support Services Manager
Clare Tibble - Administrator
Alternatively, you may write to:
Ron Staker , Chief Executive, The Brendoncare Foundation, Victoria Road, Winchester SO23 7DU
You may also, at any time, raise concerns directly with our Inspector, Marilyn Lewis, at the address below:

Please be aware that complaints relating to individual residents made by a third party can only be investigated with the consent of the resident involved.
Fire Policy
In order to minimise the risk of fire, the home is regularly risk assessed by a Fire Officer and a wide range of fire detection and prevention measures are in place. Fire alarms are tested weekly and all staff receive fire training. The home is designed so that, in the unlikely event of a fire, total evacuation would not be necessary. Should the fire alarm sound, residents should remain in their rooms and await guidance from staff. We request that all visitors to the home use the book in reception to sign in and out in order that we have a record of visitors to the premises.
Action on Hearing the Fire Alarm
Stay calm and remain in your room - staff will know where to find you
Do not try to move unless asked or assisted to do so
Await further instructions from a member of staff
